Ａｄｏｌｅｓｃｅｎｃｅ 「リトルバスターズ！」 ｜Ｌｉｔｔｌｅ Ｂｕｓｔｅｒｓ！Review

What “Adolescence” do you have? Do you remember “Childhood”? The irreplaceable one existed there.
Always beyond my expectation, developed something this unbelievably awesome. As I begin, deliriousness drives me apart from anything and keep going through route after route, story after story, kill my time, productivity, energy, awareness and for sure what will you bring out on Key developed visual novel, tears, indeed. Most appreciation to Key, which its works surpass my imagination. Such fascinating development I couldn’t put it into words anymore. My life is complete.. that’s.. what I want to say after completed this flawlessly. The characters are intriguing, decent art and design, that I actually find it better than in any VN I’ve played and very likable, bring out their own heartening feels out toward the main character and quite stimulating personality. In spite of those all, what makes me quite disappointed is Riki’s voice. It’s such a rare occasion where he still maintaining that kind of feminine voice out of place, though, well, it couldn’t be helped, so I had to bear with that. At least his voice only can be heard in baseball practice and some point in Refrain route.

The main title of this VN itself, Little Busters! , doesn’t contain the main theme or what kind of story it is about literally. Adolescence, the keyword. The main setting take place in the world which Kyousuke and the other created in order to make Riki and Rin, who don’t know what had actually happened in their real world, mature from their childish thinking and stronger to face the upcoming reality.
In this plot, it’s all make sense at the true ending why all 5 heroine other than Rin have to be accomplished first, though for Yuiko, I wonder why her true ending could only be seen after Refrain is completed.

If I have to compare Little Busters! with Clannad, I’m not sure which one is better. From the looks, both have great place setting and if I want to compare, it’s the school uniform. Clannad uses kinda plain and bland yet epic design on the school uniform, while Little Busters has it cool and stylish, which I’m taking a like from it, plus with the solid color it’s using, prove it obvious. The heroine’s appearance are apparently more appealing in Little Busters, while there’s this typical visual aspect in Clannad. I believe this kind of development is getting better due to improvement from year to year.
Take a look on the inner content, the plot for Little Busters is a unique unthinkable one, giving excitement all over the place and with some fantasy and imaginary world take hold on it, personally I like this a bit more than Clannad, whilst Clannad has its own imaginary world, as collecting a certain amount of light orbs unlock the true ending. In other hand, Clannad itself has interesting plot, though the way each main character solve the problem in their own adequate manner is more seen uplifting in Little Busters, since it take the matter into a solid point that I take it as life-threatening one. Following the true ending of each, the most profound meaning is found in Clannad.

The soundtracks and themes, the quality? Don’t doubt those in the works of Key. Boredom-killing rhythm together with fascinating ever songs, it’s just too magnificent to turn an ignorance towards those. Heart-touching enough, though it’s quite comparably less sentimental to Clannad’s, but still, unfading harmony-filled sounds I never get bored with even countless playback.

Now for the routeline..
The Little Busters member Kengo excluded, Kyousuke, Masato, Rin, and Riki, they built a not enough member baseball team and  started to pratice with Riki as batter and Rin as the pitcher. Also, there’s additional battle ranking system which doesn’t have much purpose but fun. At this beginning part, chosen choice and heroine encounter will determine the main route of its heroine. Rin is clearly seen since she’s a part of Riki’s childhood. Haruka who often loitering in Riki’s classroom, Komari who is found at rooftop whilst Riki’s in a mission to search for another member, Yuiko who drag Riki whilst searching for Kyousuke because a fight between Masato and Kengo, then Kudryavka whom Riki see somewhen after practice, and last Mio which encounter happens in the middle of Riki doing practice because of a stray ball.

Each of them slowly joined into the team. In spite of that, Mio only became the manager, rendered the team lack for the last member, which supposed to be Kengo, though he only joined from the second playthrough. 2 weeks since the starting point, the time has come to the baseball match. Luckily, I took my win on the second playthrough, The opponent team was ridiculously good I had to repeat the match countless times,hence I conclude devil luck is a must.
After the baseball match, apparently the route splits here. Go through a certain heroine into her most inner-self.

Warning: spoiler ahead.

Komari’s route. Kamikita Komari, a funny childish girl who likes sweet things. Kind of sloppy, clumsy and love to help people, also fond of picture books. Her main problem is revolve around her mysterious brother who always appears in her dream, though her brother was actually real and has died already. How she’s so close with her brother and with the way her brother died with unsettling parting words of him. One day, the sight of dead cat in front of her made her remember about her brother and turned her into miserable condition, where she saw Riki as her brother. In order to get out from this misery and bring Komari back to her original state, Riki created a picture book with sad story of little match girl. The purpose was to tell Komari the hidden meaning in the picture book which was about hens, chicks, and eggs, which her brother wanted to tell her. Not to keep forgetting because of sadness and sad because can’t go back to the past, but grow up and accept sad things. Komari at last returned to her self-being and made her third wish.

Haruka’s route. Saigusa Haruka, quite a troublemaker for some reason and one might call her noisy, though I kinda like that part of her. Her exaggeratedness somehow convey delight pleasure in mind as I’m more affected by her. Well, I like her the most despite her being noisy all over, making ruckus and make those prefects chase after her. There’re times when she reveal her cute side, especially where she gives some effort to make those cake.

Haruka was given bad treatments from her family due to inheritance matter in  her family because she was born with her twin sister, Futaki Kanata, who eliminated everything that Haruka fond of around her, believed that she did it to make Haruka stay as she is. That’s why Haruka made all the trouble in purpose to shame Kanata. Their difference seen in their eyes color, due to ovulation from 2 fathers, I believe. One day, bitter fact of Haruka’s father, Saigusa Shou, spread around the school and pulled out a big uproar. Haruka then wanted to prove which she is supposed to be, the Saigusa or Futaki. Together with Riki, they did some research and met dead end. At a time, Kanata tried to make Riki give up on his effort helping Haruka by disguised herself as Haruka. In the end, Haruka just wanted to know how she was born, but her mother didn’t want to tell her, but told Haruka to ask her father Saigusa together with Kanata. Desperately, begging for Kanata’s support, revealed how Kanata got painful treatment as well and how she cares about Haruka.
Finally, ended with explanation given from Saigusa Shou and settled matter between Haruka and Kanata.

Kud’s route. Noumi Kudryavka, cheerful and funny, with foreign appearance. Most people gave her a foreign looks, made her trying  to speak her ‘try better next time’ no-go English. It’s really funny when she played her self Doppler effect, desu yo ne..yo ne.. yo ne… Oh Kud, just if she’s my imouto.
The real matter of Kud was quite short. Her mother, a cosmonaut failed at her launching. Her being which was unknown agitated Kud. Kud then got a ticket to that place, Tevua. She should go, so there she flew. Riki got a call from Kud, cried for help. Their distance was so far, rendered Riki unable to do anything. Riki then found a piece of melted gear attached to a dog tag. Holding ‘that’ thing while wondering what it was, he fell unconscious. Heard the voice of Kud and gradually saw her, whose hand chained, prisoned in a dark place, going to be sacrificed because of what had her mother done. Listening to Kud, who couldn’t see him, along the line, ‘that’ was actually a piece of crashed rocket she got after the real incident in ‘real world’ , before the school trip, where because of her mother, a country collapsed.Kud got a chance to go back at that time, but she didn’t.(this part makes sense after Refrain) She regret it and so that piece of crashed rocket was the wreckage of her feelings. Riki told her not to give up and reached for his hand, ‘that’ which Riki hold in his hand at his room somehow moved to Kud’s hand. She threw it and the chains binding her shattered into pieces. She struggled to get out of the place and reached the light, free. The last scene is where Riki meets Kud at the school gates.

Yuiko’s route, Kurugaya Yuiko, mysterious beauty with slightly monotone voice. I think Yuiko’s route is the shortest possible one with less effort in her case. Being in love, she dreamed for that moment and kept repeating. Riki who had been dragged into the dream couldn’t do anything and once they wake up, they’ll forget each other and their feelings as well. The story ended in such awkward way, even after completing Refrain and achieve her true ending. Such settlement I couldn’t bother much about it.

Mio’s route. Nishizono Mio, a bookworm, lack of expression, and quiet girl, though talkative when it’s book what she’s talking about. She always carried her parasol, which the actual reason is to hide her lost shadow. Riki and Mio went out and at he last destination, a beach, a girl whose appearance was exactly as Mio appeared, called Midori. As a counterpart of Mio, Midori is full of  expression and talkative girl. Apparently, her existence is the cause of Mio’s lost shadow. At that moment, Riki couldn’t catch what’s going on, loss at words, then soon fell asleep due to his sleep disorder, Narcolepsy. At the class, Mio got replaced with Midori, but everything went normally and everyone except Riki recognized her as Nishizawa Mio. Midori kept pushing Riki, trying to make him go with her instead of Mio. Riki almost forget about Mio at some point before time when he kept Mio’s favorite poem. Keeping that in mind, Riki didn’t give up on Midori, thus gave Riki a hint where Mio might be at. At the beach where last time Riki was with Mio, he found her there. Heard the real occurrence, Midori was actually Mio’s unreal little sister, which she forgot along with her therapy on the ‘real world’. I myself didn’t get it at first, before completing Refrain, wondering why such thing imaginary could be real in a form. Hence, she promised to exchange with Midori once she found her again. Took a farewell with Riki, she disappeared. Riki then got a call from Midori, told to go after Mio, bring her back. Riki went through to the ocean and after some times, he fell unconscious. While at that state, hearing the conversation between Mio and Midori. Mio didn’t want Midori to disappear, Midori told her that she’s always be with her and then nowhere to be seen. Riki awoke and found Mio looking at him, covering the sun behind her. They walked together in sunset.

Rin’s route. With all that, the necessary requirements are all complete to commence in this session of Natsume Rin, Quite childish, shy, and athletic enough despite being a no-con as pitcher. Needless to say, her love to cats is a bit much. Often kicks Masato since he kinda irritates her. Her part started from the mission she got from unknown person who put messages through Lennon, Rin’s new cat. There’s a secret of this world. Together with Riki, Rin completed every task given despite mysterious person behind those tasks, until Rin was offered to move to another school that was the sister school. It’s more like student exchange program with purpose to raise the spirit of students there which most of them got into a bus accident. Riki who felt something was off, wandered at night, searching for Lennon. After a while, he found Lennon, with Kyousuke. Yeah, Kyousuke was the mastermind of this scheme, planning and controlling everything behind the stage. The day after, the last message Rin got through Lennon, ‘save the sister school’. Of course this is what Kyousuke was planning on Rin, from the very start, to make Rin out from his care and be independent. Riki thought that would be the best since it’s Kyousuke the one who made this happen. Even though he has been going out with Rin, he made her go.
Everything was such a mess, Rin scared, didn’t know anyone there and couldn’t be contacted by anyone but Riki. A few days passed and Rin’s still in misery, cried although only could show it with emoticon she sent to Riki. Riki’s trying to go to her place, but Kyousuke hold him, told him to wait another 3 days, he would make Rin could come back at Saturday, though she could actually back once every 2 weeks.

Rin’s back. She didn’t want to meet anyone but Riki. At the night Riki talked with Kengo. Riki wanted to run away with Rin, there’s no time left and Riki was afraid of losing Rin. Kengo told if they run away at the moment, nothing but despair ahead of them. There’s time and the only way to protect the Little Busters now is to fight Kyousuke. They settled it on the field with Kengo and Riki as partners against Kyousuke and Masato. Because of Kyousuke’s dirty trick, Kengo and Riki lost. Riki didn’t have any choice, hence he made a decision to run away with Rin.

The following day, they went in the morning to Rin’s grandpa’s house. They began to live their days there despite Rin’s grandpa’s unknown whereabouts. Many new cats Rin played with since she couldn’t bring the cats at the school. Soon, Riki found he couldn’t draw his money anymore since it’s blocked. Their life’s getting worse each day. A few days after, a police officer run across Riki when he was on his way to back home. Didn’t want to get caught, he run away. At the night, suddenly a door bell ring. Apparently, many people wanted to make sure of them. Riki tried to run away again at the moment, but Rin truly wanted to bring her cats with her this time. Riki didn’t want them to be caught because Rin kept shouting the cats’ names. Covered her mouth, Rin didn’t stay calm, bite his hand and free from Riki’s grasp. He heard many footsteps, then Rin’s scream. Riki had lost her.

That’s how Rin’s route ended. Felt like bad ending, though it’s not actually that. The option after the ending theme is the decisive factor to advance to Refrain, which I believe, the true ending of Rin’s route, as well with Little Busters. Become stronger is the only way.

Start again from the square one where most of things were in scenario failure aftereffects. The world repeating again with Riki and Rin didn’t get a clue what actually happened while the others were actually aware of what happened back there although Rin could recall a few occurrence that had something with Riki. One apparent change in Riki, he grew stronger, indeed. Rin became very timid of other people exept Riki and children in school which took care of students with special circumstances, which Rin went there. She no longer study at the school she supposed to go with Riki. Being so paranoid, Riki himself didn’t know why it turned out like that. Kyousuke regret what he had done. Lost all of his enthusiasm, sunken and sorrowful, like he had give up on his life.

Rin got interested in pitching. With that, she’s starting to get close to Kengo and Masato, whom Riki invited them to play catch together with Rin. Kengo whose left arm is broken because of his fight with Masato, played happily since he got nothing to do, quit after only one a day they got to play together because he saw Riki planned to form a baseball team like Kyousuke has done before that he didn’t want it to be repeated. Riki had no clue and ask Masato. Masato who as well aware of the cause quit, leaving Riki alone with Rin. From here, It’s much more like Riki replaced Kyousuke’s position, trying to form Little Busters once again. Start from 2 member, Riki and Rin, Riki told Rin to go to same school first. With some compromise, Rin agree and she started to take classes.

From here on, the story itself is actually seen from every Little Busters’ members’ perspective and thinking. Before completed the Refrain, I found myself thinking it might something deep and mysterious while apparently it’s not like that, but rather just a simple thing which come in simply make-sense way.

Riki wanted to reform Little Busters once again. He and Rin are the only members at the moment and the next one they wanted to join with them is Masato. Masato refused and at the following day, something messed up in his head, seeing everyone around him as himself. He wanted to keep himself as himself, didn’t want anyone to replaced him, he knocked out anyone who got near him. Riki acted to stop him by a trick which is to make Masato’s hand glued to a statue, rendered his right hand unusable. It worked, but surprisingly Masato still able to move, dragging the statue along with him. With some tricks and Rin’s assistance, Riki tried to stop him although Masato still stood firm, leaving Riki to fight him was the only choice. They fought and Masato was beat. In spite of that, he’s still standing, looking at the sky as having flashback of his childhood.

He was stupid and looked down by people around him, so to change that, he trained and built his body, made him stronger than anyone who look down upon him. Everyone became afraid of him, left him alone.
Little Kyousuke appeared in front of him, challenge him to a fight. Kyousuke used a trick to stuck Masato’s right hand in the mailbox, but Masato could still move, dragging the mailbox with him, leaving Kyousuke to have a real fight with him is the only choice. Kyousuke beat Masato. In spite of that, Masato was still standing. Kyousuke asked why he kept struggling despite all of that and saw Masato struggling to bear the loneliness in him, and so everyone won’t laugh at him. But as time passed, Masato didn’t know anymore what he had been struggling for. Kyousuke told him to stay as he is and join them, having fun together. He felt calm as he found the place he belong to. Masato came back to his awareness, with Riki said that he’s an irreplaceable friend to him. He collapsed as he took a rest from their fight.

Masato joined the Little Busters. With 3 members, their next target was to make Kengo join them. In their childhood, Kyousuke, Masato, and Rin came to the dojo where kengo had his kendo training, beat the instructor who’s Kengo’s father and with that, Kengo joined the Little Busters. At the moment, Riki still didn’t get why Kengo joined back then, so he tried to figure that out since Kengo refused to join. In Kengo’s perspective, he saw Riki planned to reach the same goal as Kyousuke, hence tried to avoid it due to his awareness of what happened back then because of Kyousuke’s forceful scheme and backfired at Kyousuke himself, turned him into that sorrowful condition. Riki had no idea, went to Kyousuke’s room to see him. He’s just felt powerless, wanted to be in Kyousuke’s brace, though he hold it. Kyousuke which looked lifeless couldn’t do anything either, but told Riki that Kengo told him one lie. By some means, Riki found out Kengo lied about his broken arm which actually fully healed already. Kengo was actually simpler than Riki thought. In his mind, he just wanted to have fun with everyone, that’s why. Then, Kengo told there’s darkness at the end of Riki’s journey and he offered to protect Riki forever in exchange of giving up forming the Little Busters so Riki could rest peacefully. Riki refused it. He still wanted to reach that destination awaits him. At last resort, Rin and Masato suggested Riki to have baseball match with Kengo.

From Kengo’s perspective, he remembered Kyousuke’s scheme to make him lose on the baseball match at the moment before the time loops back. Infringed upon Kengo’s privacy, Kyousuke made Kengo catch a glimpse of  Koshiki standing there. Hence, he couldn’t forgive Kyousuke. In that world, Kengo wanted to protect Riki and Rin. Didn’t want them to fall into darkness again, he decided to put an end to Little Busters. At a visit to Kyousuke, Kyousuke said Riki has grew stronger, though Kengo couldn’t believe it. Riki challenged him to baseball game. He claimed in front of Kyousuke, he’ll win the game. He belief Riki couldn’t cheating to win the game like Kyousuke did.

The game started. Kengo hit the ball Masato pitch decently as he didn’t give any chance for Riki to win. Rin suddenly interrupt, wanted to pitch so badly and with agreement on both sides, the game continue with Rin as the pitcher. The situation changed as Kengo realized Rin was a no-con. A mistake in Kengo’s view and he lost. He cried as he remembered the time when Kyousuke came at the dojo in their childhood. They beat up Kengo’s father in order to make Kengo could play with them. Kengo didn’t really like kendo and just wanted to quit, but didn’t have any chance to. Thus Kyousuke made him joined Little Busters, the precious moment where there’re only fun things to do.

The last person to complete the original Little Busters, Kyousuke.
Riki and Rin ran away, set the gear out of order and disturb ‘that’ world’s balance as Kyousuke’s scenario didn’t meet it’s expectation. Woke up in the real world, his body was in pain all over. Reeks of gasoline commands his body to crawl to its source. Hearing people talking, he went back to his consciousness which also remains in ‘that’ world, seeing Riki and the others came to see him. As he went back to sleep, his regained his awareness in the real world. Apparently he regains his consciousness in one world whilst unconscious at the other one and vice-versa, but once he got back to the real world, his time returned to where he started from the fist place.
He back to ‘that’ world again just for awhile and moved back again. There’s all pain, even Kyousuke thought about giving up and just stay forever at ‘that’ world, having fun together without getting Riki and Rin into despair. Though, he’s still struggling, crawling again, but in a short time turn into ‘that’ world again at the moment only to found Riki clueless about what he have to do, therefore he gave Riki a hint about Kengo.
Return in real world, he pictured Riki rescuing everyone with Rin helping him as he crawling, but Kyousuke just wished it’ll never happen or all he’s been doing is for nothing.
In ‘that’ world, Kengo talked to him about Riki challenge Kengo on a baseball game.
Back to real world again, this time he made it into the source of  the foul smell. Using his jacket, he cover the leaking liquid with his jacket and put his back to weight on it. It looks like he can only waiting for now and go back to ‘that’ place, but once he pass out there, he would return to the starting point in the real world again and what he did this far would be reset. Therefore, he will make sure his body in real world fell unconscious for long time enough. Turning the starting point into the place where he dies is what he thought. Kyousuke then hit his right hand to a sharp glass.

Kyousuke back into the other world. In front of him is Riki stretching his hand toward him, told him to go together. Behind Riki are the Little Busters member, Rin, Masato, and Kengo. Kyousuke reach his hand to Riki’s and go together.

Last episode, Little Busters.
With 5 of them, they play baseball once again. such scenery, with hope that just if this could stay forever.
Rin pitch, Riki hit the ball which gonna be foul, but Masato able to catch it. With that, it’s parting time with Masato. With some words and then throw the ball to Riki, he disappeared. Just seeing this moment makes me couldn’t hold my tears anymore, though I should see the ending.

Being confused, Riki in such a panic. Kyousuke then explain everything to him. About the secret of this world. He now has to come back to the world where something happen. The truth about the current artificial world he’s living in now is a world created from ripples of thought of everyone ‘there’. When they decided to make the world for Riki and Rin, their thoughts mixed up and created a huge ripple. The world created for them so Riki and Rin could grow strong enough to overcome the cruel reality, where they’re all got in the bus accident and only survivors are Riki and Rin. It’s so sudden, but Riki think he must go, to that place.

After the explanation Riki gives Rin tha ball and continue the game. Riki hit the ball. The ball reach Kengo and so, parting time with Kengo. With some words as tears built up on Kengo’s eyes, he then shake hand with Riki and disappeared.

The game continue. The ball is hit and fly faraway this time, a home-run. Kyousuke took off his glove and start walking off. Riki want to have a talk with him, he want to be forever with him, doesn’t care about being strong or anything. Kyousuke himself doesn’t want to leave them. He want to be with them as well, saying that whilst crying. But that’s all impossible. They still have to go. Kyousuke then told him to not hesitate and go, hence Riki and Rin running, through the school gate.

Following the timeline, the world’s seen from Rin’s view. Begin from the club room, she saw a note which filled with drawings and writings like a picture books. The story is about one boy, one girl, and eight dwarfs. Each of the dwarfs has their own problem. The girl becomes friend with them all. the boy helps each of them to get over their problems and after the problems solved, they leave the forest one after another. The story is just like Riki, Rin, and the other Little Busters members. A picture of Little Busters taken after they won the baseball match, fell from the note. Rin forgot about those all. She didn’t get why she didn’t realize they’re not there anymore. Mio, Haruka, Kurugaya, or even Kud, Rin couldn’t find them anywhere. At last, she went to the rooftop. Komari was there.
She’s there to give her farewell words to Rin. Rin once talked with Komari about the stars ornament she wears. Komari treats it as her wishing stars. Komari wanted to give the second wish to Rin but couldn’t think of any wish at that time. Rin recalled this moment after so long forgetting it. Rin cried while Komari smiled for their farewell. Komari gave her wishing star to Rin then, wished that Rin could always smiling. Like that, the world turns all white.

Starting to regain his awareness, Riki found out he’s in the bus with Rin who also became conscious with her surrounding. Together they crawled out of the bus. Everyone was in such horrible state. Like that, there’re only 2 choices to pick. Either to rescue everyone, or just escape with Rin, though at this time, they couldn’t rescue their friends. I they didn’t escape at the moment, they would also die. They walked away and after some distance, Riki fell asleep from his illness.

Riki woke up, found him in a hospital with Rin beside him. Riki swear he will protect Rin forever and Rin asked was that a proposal. Just answered yes for the supposed-to-be true ending later.

The true story doesn’t end here. One might be able to overcome this all, having enough of this and face reality head on. But just for the sake of true story that’s not supposed to be bitter like this, just have all your selfishness and just complain it’s not enough. Everyone is not there.
Riki did have a chance to rescue everyone just if he could overcome his Narcolepsy. The text image of Kyousuke told him, that’s not an option. Even Rin wasn’t strong enough. There, Rin said she’ll make herself stronger as well. They’re connected. That world doesn’t exist anymore, but Riki and Rin will create it. As they go, a ripple spread.

The time went back to where Rin’s going to take farewell to that world with everything seen from Rin’s point of view. She remember. She didn’t forget all of them. Everyone was there. She recall when she had fun with Mio, Haruka, Kurugaya, Kud, and Komari. She wanted to apologize to them, but she couldn’t. They’re not there anymore. Rin learned how much important everyone to her. She recalled the time when Komari wished for Rin’s smile. In order to keep smiling, she need everyone around her and believe she could still make it come true.
Holding Komari’s wishing star ornament, she took her oath to fulfill Komari’s wish. She calls Riki to take her hand. Together thay’ll fulfill that wish.

As for Riki, he retraced his steps far back until at the time he hasn’t born yet. He didn’t want to learn anything. Didn’t want to be born and having all those cruelty. But there’s someone in his memories. He wanted to meet her even though everything will be lost in the end. The image of everyone around him back then cycle through his mind, giving him a warm feeling. The encounter is far more precious and irreplaceable than anything. He overcame his fear and accepted to be born into a whole new world.
To be obvious, this scene reminds me of how Tomoya in Clannad call for Nagisa even though there will be bitter fate awaits them, thus he back to the most important moment of their life with Nagisa lost her unexplainable illness. Looks alike, indeed.

Riki and Rin once again stand at the site of the bus accident. Riki who has overcome his Narcolepsy and Rin who grew stronger are going to rescue everyone this time.
