Tellus 「Rewrite」|「リライト」 Review

Bring forth, over and more with divine astonishment by key fragments in state of the art masterpiece. In terms of visual and art, the overall nerve-encompassing credence, this assuredly is the most retina-twisting effort by Key yet. If anything, the entire aspects minus a certain point is the best I’ve experienced so far I might get dejected seeing something less impressive than this. Took in the afterwork scenario to mother nature, a sui generis arrangement right from the ground up through the means by which all plausible. That involved psychical and reasoning whilst surprisingly, infeasible alteration of physical capability is subject to off in real sense. Bestride ambivalence of vein lines in eidetically fresh and exquisite land of Kazamatsuri. In the term, power, fate, world, choice, cause and effect. The vast implication from nothing to everything composed the kernel as the development branches with one focal theme along with the emphasized as though a wheel of fate, gear of Rewrite.

過酷な淘汰をはじめよう。

By the time the journey began, clear green gear moved as like it works as the starting sign. Few lines of monologue and there the Philosophyz-themed opening plays, introducing every main heroine and following that, CG after CG with seamless perfect transition of characters and some great detailed imaging on the enclosing background view. Being a letdown due to which what I believe is the length of the opening, the uses of CG, while not too much, is spoiling few of decent events to be revealed later better. Either it’s the custom of every VN opening or unwritten rule, this supposed to be limited to common route only. Well, the thoughts of watching the op interesting-less might come out subconsciously though.

Took place in the afforestation-filled city of Kazamatsuri surrounded with nature environment. For a change of air, the peaceful-bringer modernity on the calm all-over greenery looks refreshing in eyes.

Background spread is so clean it feels like I’m going to get sucked in just by looking at them. So clean that there’s no random, neither students in class nor people on streets – deliberately none for the best choice indeed. The scenery look greatly clear and rich of details, bringing another elegancy and gallantness to the surface of first Key in high definition that which not over-powering but awesome enough, is solid crystal clear – crisp render on full wide display of maximum 720p.

Interface element is as robust as ever, based with minimalism keep the display at clear view. All the menu buttons got nice radius rounding the corner and the round quick menu icons are well-build along with its activation transition.

Witness the new-born power of Siglus engine, though might many have far more superior interface, I find Rewrite has the greatest, fluid on touch and interactively packed with useful features more than what previous works have. Transition speed, text background adjustment, reading speed, sound sliders, voice toggles. Those are pretty much what todays advanced vn got. More than those, the option to choose what the right click does is convenient for me to timesaving. Screen mode option sounds common and so far, I haven’t known any vn that doesn’t have this on the config layer, let alone the pretty animation running as the rearmost background, but the main point is where the transition, windowed to fullscreen or vice versa, is so fluent as though it’s integrated into the os. Well, I think that’s actually the case since how the taskbar isn’t changed into classic theme nor forced to zoom fitting the window. Feature running by autosave spirit every change of date. Not really useful on itself, but combine with rotating queue of data blocks makes it quite handy in case a need to back to a few days ago. One page containing ten blocks of dataspace keeps the most recent ten autosave data and this works on quicksave page as well, giving a chance to load into missed something at critical time and keeping track of data in speed.

Space where joke couldn’t get tasteless, the common route is full of laughter and still just in the beginning, a surprised response by those who know the lineup for long, time collating supernatural and in-real unfeasible terra incognita extraterrestrial-like presence already took time before even the quarter part of the storyline, likewise the mysteries keeping the vague exposure in modesty. Blessed with prominent response or frightening feel was fresh still, or else, being in Occult Research Club hosted by Akane slipped a kind of wary and atrocious sense, — encounters of random out-of-dimension area felt tense as like dread seep into heartbeat.

Characters design matter, in term of art. Better than ever, the well-balanced and natural proportion of heroines physical appearance is soft and not overly flawless-figured in eyes. All long-haired designed is perfect for me, but objectively leaving those who praise short or maybe half-long hair nothing but Kagari. Regardless, the heroine stunningly attractive, equally appealing, and purely entrancing in their own disparate story altogether.

Those cute frilly despite complexity girl school uniform is something worth a patent, just like that gorgeous red-lining black uniform of LB. The design is so unique that I who might have a screw loose and a cultist of minimalism don’t find it overdone at all. If else, I like it. On the contrary, the boy version doesn’t that stand out, though as for its badge counterpart, resembling a king’s crown attached to a chain-connecting-clip to breast pocket looks extraordinarily cool.

Starting mainly at a classy luxurious highschool of Kazamatsuri from the first October, the long imprinting on common route began. Keeping the role as a protagonist, there at least one close but not-so-close-here male friend and the rest are needless to say, the heroines. Kotarou the main character joined the dim nonexistent Occult Research Club by Akane’s condition to Kotarou’s ghost problem. Kotori then followed, along with Chihaya who’s in already and somehow the relation details to Akane was skipped. With moral guard Shizuru got in along with Lucia, the gypsies were all there in the lair of mystery. More activities in order and most of them were just like what Okaken usually do, investigating weird and supernatural-sounded lead. Gags everywhere, of course not leaving out Yoshino. If anything, he and his cheesy lines just became easy target to make fun of.

One month to be exact, entering day one on November means a route has decided with an exception to Lucia which her route is on different sight than the others. The initial matter of common route in more or less a week, the problem which opened up to be the beginning of the true journey has unveiled. Polluted environment in such wicked form that brought me the thought of how the real could become no more fictional. Trying to imagine what a rainbow swamp full of toxic chemical under the described situation there enough to induce nausea. Escalating in no time, the missing one side character who indirectly related to Okaken brought a more severe problem which then 13 November, the last day of peaceful normal playful fun times came to an end. In order to find the missing girl Inoue, they deliberately went to the forest and there appeared a dragon floating in the sky. Awakening aurora blade of Kotarou, power rewriting, and dim appearance of Key bend the path in complete turnaround. Depending on the route in act, the last response has slight difference.

It’s the turning point in the middle of the matter, which means not what I usually see where common matter got resolved before entering one route, here the real deal of the whole mysteries put into complexity of each respective route. Back a little on route flag system, so far I’ve seen on the lineup, picking choices was hit or miss when going through for the first time, few given of either random reactions or typical target place in the options. That being said, though it’s pretty easy and less hassle compared with previous work. Get ready for developments that exceed the brain processing power of myriad teraflops. Kazamatsuri, role as if it became a pillar of Yggdrasil, full round unexpected development had come into involvement of Earth and its omnipotent core. Patching missing information overtime due to skipped details, one step closer each to completion of the puzzle of mysteries. On some points, the change of outlook took place to give a thorough perspectival viewpoint of other characters keep us out of the cold of event.

Not all heroines were ready to get their flag raised from the get-go. On the initial ready, Kotori, Chihaya, and Lucia whilst the other two unlocked after accomplishing certain route out of those three. Good choice to make some of the route locked and become available after for the purpose to not explaining things repeatedly, keeping information from overflowing meaninglessly and make use of previous knowledge to reform the information given. Turning ataraxis into battlefield of summoner and superhuman, the plot became no reality doable anymore. Break into an everlasting avant-garde of foliaceous enumeration in ripe ontogenesis, as like filament philia wraps the awe-inspiring ambience of tranquility, stem me the notion of the beauty of life. The focus for the route swipe aside track of time and noninvolved character practically up to the end. Every route went on their respective separate way, going through on fraction after another, experiencing the moment where at one time in the protector of humanity side, or the planet cultism path, or on the sidetrack where it’s rejecting the vision of the cult. Fateful war between familiar users called summoner that is Gaia and superpower-using-mortal that is Guardian. They of which ideology clash fought for their own belief. Though objectively thinking, Gaia is in the wrong zone here. To think Earth will be protected by destruction of everything, calamity of human being, and rebuild all from scratch is absurd. They act as religious group made it looked even worse. Both organizations became the focal settings where most things after were inevitably related to them. In spite of that, each single route doesn’t chatter around that too much and having unique development and totally contrastive outcome one and another. Gradual – chain of climax put the storyline profoundly touch and excite the long and harsh journey, tore the bitter matters into the darkest core, though that’s what made it so fulfilling following such stepwise chronology. The connection within the story and means are scattered into each route that there’s no exact complete picture upon the puzzle. Every one of them related to each other by convoluted order of path or twist of fate. Some occurrence although didn’t have any real meaning or purpose but might be forced or no choice up left to fill the last stand. Those all be in the end, a unison of wisdom at time the position went to each of heroine’s perspective and way of life.

Main character voicing his inner thought of small yet profound thing called happiness and the cruelty of time on the aurora-illuminating prologue. The protagonist Tennouji Kotarou, extrovert, active, talkative, easygoing, led everything to his way. Being so carefree and got along with anyone, that include Yoshino who looks like a delinquent who kinda overreact from anything and talks cheesy everytime, though Kotarou who’s an optimist’s hard to feel dejected, easily tricked his close and awkward companion to end up playing along with him. Not so idiot and quite creative to be able to make events came into place. Appears that he’s actually a superhuman whose power is polluter type which able to rewrite any parts of his physics and later awoken his ability to make aurora-shaped blade from his cut wrist (another version of sonic hand?). Along the common route, his backstory was vague and his serious conversation with Yoshino sounded incomprehensible, like his way of thinking was hidden, made him pretty mysterious for a male lead.

ようこそジプシー。我が神秘の空間へ

Lay two contradicting organization Gaia and Guardian, but there also exist the side which didn’t weight neither those two. Being neutral though unconsciously helping Gaia by keeping the Key in the safe zone, revealed a little lonely bud. Somehow felt mysterious and distinctively unpredictable with unique personality, Kanbe Kotori, pretty sweet and random girl who likes and is really good at gardening. Everyone’s gone leaving Kotarou by himself. Then Kotori came back but soon disappear along with Kotarou’s memories of her. Here, Yoshino’s role was able to snap Kotarou back to his sense and reached Kotori again in the forest. All secret of her revealed here which she’s actually a Druid given role and power by plant familiar Mistletoe to protect the ‘Key’. Also the past of Kotarou that he who was in desperate second got the help of Kotori’s druid power and Key’s piece of ribbon power. That explains why the Key haunted his room at night and the origin of his aurora blade. Kotori realized there’s no time enough as the Key suddenly appeared whilst she hadn’t prepared completely. Things crumbled as they caught in the middle of all-out war between Gaia and Guardian, with agonizing and painful tear-jerking moment after moment restlessly. Kotori’s grieve of her unsolicited role, last minute of Chibimoth who was familiar-made-Pero, and unbearably deplorable truth of her parents who died and revived into familiar in her very childhood. Even so, that last second of them showing their granted will of heart was beautiful and teary. The final touchdown, in the middle of running away from everything, the elimination of Key shot by Shizuru out of nowhere means the end of Kotori’s power as a Druid, resulting in control off to the power spot, thus Kotarou who got himself familiar-like body suck power out of Kotori who made him that way. Made her release the contract, the last climax of Kotori struggled to bring wound-reopening-covered-body Kotarou to hospital. Most parts of Kotori route are just sad and the ending is practically unsatisfactory, showing incomplete resolve without clear conclusion, leaving the rest into my imagination. Nonetheless, her route is the most touching between all five.

Ohtori Chihaya, clumsy and quite cheerful transfer student for a reason keep wearing her old school uniform. She being honest yet dishonest at times and bluntly says anything in her mind is so lovable I really like that part. She’s kind of pure and idiot, and that’s the funny part of her, and maybe because of her super strength as well, she often became subject to jokes. In Chihaya route, Kotarou was siding with her as a part of Gaia which then known Akane is a part of that organization though they seemed not agree with Gaia’s way of teaching. As summoner of Gaia, Chihaya hold an important part by having the strongest familiar that later unveiled that he’s Sakuya himself, thus explained the source of Chihaya’s super strength. Reasoning in part of battle along with Chihaya against Midou, loose part of Gaia I don’t get it myself. Midou’s word kept lingering inside Kotarou’s head and that in desperate moment where as parts of Gaia, Nishikujou-sensei and indecisive Shizuru tried to kill Sakuya and hurt Chihaya, made Kotarou lose his mind due to over-rewrite. Out of control Kotarou brought ceasefire for both and Sakuya projected the tale of himself to Kotarou’s mind as they fought. Another revelation about Sakuya who was a rewriting-capable superhuman controlling cloth instead of aurora in his previous life, trying to protect a girl (info said his lover) but failed as salvation occurred and became a sakura tree from rewriting his body too much. Looking at a girl who had just lost her parents and asked for help, he thought of atone his regret and materialized as a familiar. Seeing all those memories, Kotarou at last came back to his sense. Last chain of climax, Akane went insane from projected a kind of images by Key, thus controlling two strong familiars and drove Sakuya to the corner. As a familiar himself, Sakuya already at his limit, so came another tear-squeezing moment. Akane with Sakuya’s body which she made into vessel vanish to another place, so to find where she was, the important role of Gil and Pani had come about. Two little familiars born from garbage and having their own consciousness, in spite of little time they stay together, the fast imprinting of character personalisation made their last second conversation with Kotarou teary enough. Thinking about how they want to be useful in deep meaning despite being familiars is profoundly touching. Disappeared, melted together into the power spot, they able to found Akane’s whereabouts and retract the power flow to as it was. Chihaya’s words finally reached out to Akane and returned her to her sense. Last showdown, emerged over-strengthened Sakuya in a form of an enormous gigantic familiar. So huge it did look dangerous, though the cool part was the only one left and they put it here. In order to stop it and wake him up from being unconscious, Nishikujou helped Kotarou by sent him flying to the core that held Sakuya’s body. In a pinch, Kotarou got weird Midou’s voice again and by chance received his familiar’s power that made his aurora blade flame attributed. In the final scene, Sakuya whose consciousness returned had manly fight against Kotarou before he vanished. Epilogue-like scene, a sakura petal fall bright on Chihaya’s hand and leaving the rest to our imagination. The ending is a good and satisfying one for me, though I’d like it if the last image was a clear outcome rather to just leave it half-hanging.

Senri Akane, eloquent and charming prez of Okaken. Her appearance seems like a witch, though she’s quite a charismatic kinda-hikikomori full of secret and shady authority. I can say the deal between Kotarou and her to prove supernatural existence was the beginning of everything. All passed events mainly revolved around Okaken after all. The survey at the first play hour of which option available only a neutral one first, accomplishing Chihaya route unlocked another option to choose that is ‘The World’. The explanation was detailed in this route which power to change the world is the opposite for Guardian whose superpower were used to improve oneself. Got to know also the origin of artificial Kazamatsuri where Kotarou got lost into. Siding with Akane who was the holy woman of Gaia meant a deep affiliate with Gaia, though still Kotarou himself couldn’t disagree less with Gaia’s teaching. On this route only shown Kotarou mercilessly fight his enemies. Being a part of Gaia with Akane might push him far. First half of the route didn’t get troublesome matter too much as daily busy activities of Akane as Gaia’s holy woman. The real matter started after then. Akane’s mind as a holy woman was inevitably contaminated with the ideology of the previous holy woman, thus she’s disgusted to humanity to the point she couldn’t bear it no more and sought for salvation. Her disappearance marked the beginning of calamity on the surface. Long story short, the hard work of Kotarou helping people moving to artificial city of stone took him to reach Akane there. Through his power, he managed to survive against earth dragon and last to bring Akane back with him, that for atone her sins of killing so many people. The sentimental moment of Akane who no longer had the will to live and Kotarou who want her to keep on living was felt relievedly romantic, which I love the way it went from here. The ending, both of them by intentionally spread their wicked misconduct through mass media and as the result, both were sentenced to leave the artificial city to the outside ruined earth. Nevertheless, they in ease took step together. As for this route, the matter has resolved completely to the core and the overall points left me in ease and content. The way this route concluded is fulfilling pertinent to make this the best development there yet.

Nakatsu Shizuru, wordlessly quiet yet expressive saury-lover school moral guard. Simple-minded adorable girl with distinctive twintails and golden oddeye behind her eyepatch, emitting I-want-her-to-be-my-imouto aura everywhere she goes. Got to know Gaia well, now’s time to choose change Myself unlocked by accomplishing Kotori route. As for why this route got unlocked that way still questionable since what I read is the last split second of her descriptive appearance. If anything, Chihaya route has bigger relation to Shizuru route. Enough with Gaia, the time has come for me to change side into Guardian. Getting through this route is not possible without feel captivated with her straight and honest acts. In retrospect, her adorability was and forever be irresistible to the point rejecting it isn’t something human could have done. Contrariwise, her small body makes the victims lolicons automagically. A superhuman with ability to produce many kind of drugs from her body and because she couldn’t control it properly in her childhood, the power made her right eye change its color and once intentionally erase her parents memory of her. Following her sorrowful route, the date move one month ahead only to find Kotarou’s loss of memory and fell unconscious Shizuru. Then the timeline went back right after the turning point in the moment Kotarou started to regain his memory. Daily fun life ended tragically in the middle of Kotarou’s search for Kotori. To safe Kotarou from dying from familiar attack, Shizuru took all her power to finally ended up in that current state. By unknown inner-voice which unclear till the end and somehow resemble the personification of Kotori, Shizuru awoken by sharing one life with Kotarou , but lost her voice and hearing for a change. The battle between Gaia and Guardian broke out. What to be surprise here was Sakuya who came and had a small fight with Shizuru. Chihaya who came later stop them and let out her honest thought of how they who was in the same club now fighting each other. Hence she quit from Gaia and in split second, Sakuya talked about how a certain person rewriting himself too much and made him live forever. Not being orthogonal at all, the climax of activated Key was inescapable despite Touka sacrificing herself to stop it. The world slowly evanesced, fade into white along with Shizuru’s shattered dream. The last tear-jerking moment of parting, Kotarou rewrote himself one time that it brought Shizuru’s voice and hearing back and mostly all her life (which it lacks of logical explanation). Shizuru went to the shelter while Kotarou walked away to do the last thing he can. Despite being in Guardian that known Esaka, Nishikujou-sensei, and Imamiya were there, not all aspect was explained there. Gil and Pani, other than Chihaya route, also had their part here despite no table-turning role, though it still nice to see them following Kotarou until the end of the world. The line has basically ended here, showing Shizuru’s written diary time to time she was on the shelter. The flow was so calm and remorseful it felt so anticlimactic, followed with the day she left the shelter and found a stand still tree proving the fulfilled promise of her and Kotarou. The ending might be confusing if not I accomplished Chihaya route before, as why I think Shizuru route is related more than Akane despite opposite organization. Felt too calm and tranquil it’s indeed impact-less yet halcyon beautiful ending I never saw before I didn’t even know if I should be happy or sad.

Konohana Lucia, strict, dignified, and clean worrywart of a class rep. Shizuru might adorable enough it makes humanity fall into extinction, but my awaken inner-desire prefer the sunshiny euphoric-voiced tsundere full of elatedly extravagant response that I find it so cute I managed to restrain by hugging myself. She throwing tantrum in meltdown is no other than adorable. Her bona fide character gives bright and intriguing feel, makes the typical out of her. From Shizuru route, it’s known that Lucia was a part of Guardian, though her route barely involve mission, Gaia, familliar, or something around those. Instead, the plot went on its own pace bypassing the supposed-to-be-climax of common route and took on a completely surprising different turning point. In this route only, the involvement of other heroines was solid, especially for Chihaya who time after time having a fight with Lucia and Shizuru who acted as events backsupport and agitated the climax. Jump into the route right after 28 October, the offset of the route was unique by out of image turn of event. The ghost make-believe was exceptionally mind-deceiving and eerie follow up with skilled feigning of Lucia made the creep fall off the notion. Started from Kotarou investigating the rumor of cursed girl Asahi Haruka, even with Yoshino and Lucia’s little help, he’s gotten nowhere to solve it. Then until the moment Asahi Haruka in Lucia’s body warned Kotarou herself and revelation of Lucia’s poison-emitting hands, Kotarou ended his investigation for a while, before he soon discovered the truth that Asahi Haruka is no other than Konohana Lucia herself. It was supposed to be predictable, but the way they made it seemed like a perfect camouflage yet felt a little forced. In retrospect, the ad hoc well-versed mysteries brought up in indeed deserved praises. Thought this route would give me something rigid-carved kind of plot with the nigh climax of typical route, instead they deliberately drop something more extraordinarily intense plot to the surface. After the point Kotarou rewrote himself to withstand and assimilate Lucia’s poison, the romantic and exciting day with Lucia began. For the counterpart of Shizuru in i-maid-ination, Lucia got her a cosplay-type maid costume and she in tsundere brought that to its max potential. Not forgetting Lucia’s moe shock on her date, pretty much a lethal mind-melting surprise attack. Who knows there’d be moe-ness appear judged from the previous routes. The romantic date ended before the long awaiting problem emerged. The toxicity of her poison was getting denser. Getting frustrated in isolated room, the thought of her meaning of life came into her mind and to make it worse, the researcher who once made Lucia became like that came back and made use of her. Kazamatsuri was full of Lucia’s poison of which concentration far dense due to inutile compression drug. At a certain point revealed her loss senses to smell and taste, though recalling her behavior in common route, in spite of feigning response, still felt a little off. Ignore the political part of Gaia problem with its branch, complicated time-wasting part of it lead the plan to bombing Kazamatsuri into pieces as part to destroy Key. Before that happened, Kotarou along with Shizuru and Chihaya tried to bring back Lucia from giving up her life. Embrace the agitating up to imagination sword clashing between Lucia and Shizuru due to failed reasoning with her. Just picturing the scene from the detailed descriptive battle was heart-throbbing enough. Not just Shizuru, Chihaya in opposing organization once again played an adjudicative role trying to reason with Lucia. On the peak, in shivering-excitement yet dramatic love confrontation, Kotarou put an end to meaningless life of Lucia. – In sake of wisdom, learn it yourself. The ending was lacking a clear solution to the problem that looking from each angle to every aspect there, likely it’s intentional for the purpose of telling a certain essence of living.

Be ready to face striven and anticipated bound-yielding collaboration of routes-proceeding-true-path. As the 5 routes of the heroines accomplished, the moon shines out itself from the silhouette of starting epilogue with the revelation of second op consist of overwhelmingly astounding original animation it blew the wakeless drowsiness into a mere dust, forcing my eyes and mind petrified to all the cool movements and transitions they practically and might be literally-in-my-subconscious froze my body cells.

The graphical elements are completely refined for the animation and superiorly amazing. The ground-breaking surprise was indeed mental-shaking one might get killed from the ecstatic shock. This by any chance is my first time seeing real animation so rhapsodic for a VN opening scene, thus by default makes it the best VN op yet. Starting by each heroine side by side in their stance against encircling familliars, got to see the solid shaped Kotarou’s aurora blade does a claw. There seen the earth-backing Rewrite logo looked from the moon followed with Kotarou and Kagari on windy hill. One clip after another invigorating a part of each route, right from Kotori’s druid activity in the forest, Chihaya’s battle with Midou and a split second of walking Sakuya, and Akane’s earth crumbling which Yoshino with his crew shown and Kotarou’s struggle against earth dragon. Come after, an animated CG of Chihaya for attachment and not leaving out Lucia’s fight with Shizuru. Some important side characters are mostly shown like Nishikujou, Esaka, Shimako, Gil and Pani. Feels like something is forgotten and right, the scene involving Shizuru route is nowhere to be found which kind of a letdown it is. The last part of it showing all members of Occult Research Club plus Yoshino, then closed down with flashed beautiful illustrations for every heroine and standing image of 7 fate-rewriting characters.

The huge point down from the opening is nothing but the overpowering yet worst choice of singer for the song. I never like a male lead singer to begin with, even if it’s in the greatest kind of title, and then this physic something pretty much ruins the lyrics especially with absurdly and definitely not needed nausea-lifting scream at the end. So much for Key to made this decision and even giving the song title a complete copy from the title itself. Fortunately for the fascinating deep into spinal cord animation scene to completely seize the attention, making the song sounds so priceless.

Moon, its radiance engulfs the omnipotent faith of lunar clarity on the deep dark-sated sky. Kagari, the ‘salvation’ of the earth lies in a form of a girl that is ‘Key’. In the initial time on the moon route, the situation was unexplainable. The pointer of rewrite gear was blank purposely and the place was in ruins. From many branch of the worlds, Kotarou somehow ended up here unable to die completely and cut off from time. An alternate parallel world where anything is possible might be the accurate explanation.

Kagari on the heroine routes was unpleasantly a trouble and cryptical, only seen as something that kills the humanity and the world. The unveiled truth came out, Kotarou found out that Kagari who kept staying on the hill, trying to complete the theory that would save the earth from running out of its omnipotent power. That understanding achieved as Kotarou kept rewriting his mind that he filled with such knowledge even human wouldn’t understand, the psychological and philosophical stream of information impossible to learned, lot of those achieved by him alone until the moment he almost out of control and Kagari pull him back. Knowing her intention, Kotarou’s job was to protect her since Kashima Sakura was trying to kill her off as for kill the world’s possibilities to revive. To manage that, he who able to rewrite the theory of life materialized all member of Okaken in that world of which moment was so nostalgic that it’s tear-jerking enough for me. As well for Yoshino and Sakuya, all of them scrambled to defeat familiars sent by Kashima. At times, they played around like how they used to be felt so easeful. By a mere little prank(by ‘comment’, I wonder if common people get that), the practically impossible theory finally completed, creating an endless branches of possibilities. While the theory being implemented, last wave of familiars forced its way, took out each Okaken member and even the over-strengthened Sakuya. In the brink of critical end, the implementation compiled adeptly.

The replenishment of earth’s omnipotent transplanted from the moon, provide it the nourishment of possibilities as Kotarou’s existence slowly flew leaving the moon towards the earth. Still subsist the unexplainable existence of Kagari which separate her between Moon and Earth. Despite the info, the context it based on stay dim.

Terra mater, illimitably holds the omnipotent kernel of which branches acknowledge boundless patterns of restarting. Ripples color the Moon Earth. The truest possible route of Kotarou lies in the past of his path. The initiation began, showing the severity of battlefield Kotarou’s in, then jumped back to the foremost of the timeline to get a complete chronological journey of his started. The story of Kotori’s route was connected altogether. The true nature of Kotarou who was actually ten years older than Kotori, as what she told, Kotarou was an introvert, anti-social, and all-pessimistic, utterly contrariwise to what he was known after he got a familiar-like life-force. Every line he talked out was all voiced and since it’s only in this route, his personality might the reason to leave his extrovert version out. The layout of the text windows is revamped too, clear the restrained gear of rewrite and split the block vertically to fit the NVL type dialogue and text used here.

The turning points of choices were countless like a stream of possibilities which raised goosebump at the moment I saw them. Though, almost all choices got only one option available to choose as the story was guided to draw the best line and pull the one and only rightest possibility.

Kotarou in middle school from what I believe, for a little part of starting point, got to know childhood Kotori and Akane. Met with Esaka, Kotarou was able to break free from his parents forcing him to attend martel meeting by joining Guardian. Received training and grouped with Nishikujou Touka and Imamiya Arata, their first misstep of mission led Kotarou an encounter with Kagari. Intentionally choosing the wrong option would take Kotarou to a bad end of which part is the beginning of common route itself.

Let it go precede the story to Kotarou’s exertion in foreign battlefield, carrying missions as a Guardian until he got sick of Guardian at the moment his captain mercilessly killed children with summoner ability despite noninvolvement with Gaia and saved 3 kids that later helped him from the shadow. Came back to Kazamatsuri, he met Kagari who was quite talkactive at time and decided to helped her find a good memories. So vague, though first, implicitly he needed to stop the war between Gaia and Guardian which was the most resources-wasting. That undoubtedly made sense, Gaia was already wrong from the get-go whilst Guardian was being heartless, killing anyone affiliated with familiar in spite of their ignorance. A plan for that was become a spy infiltrating both organization and destroy them from the inside. Kotarou joined Martel and soon Gaia, gathering information of both Guardian and Gaia through various methods.

Kotarou then met again with Kotori and learned that she had become druid after the accident which killed her parents. By helping Akane so she stay safe, Kotarou messed his plan up and no much time left as Kagari was starting to behave unusual. Kagari was finally spotted by Guardian as they made their move, as well with Kotarou began his act of betrayal by killing the pursuer. Lastly, entering final stage of warfare with song of destruction sang from Gaia. Kotarou killed Kotori’s familiar-parents, made her ran away and stay safe from not kept her helping him out. Took out every pursuer of Kagari from Guardian and even Esaka, he moved on to stop the singer in Gaia. Alas he was too late as the song has finished along with Kashima and her subordinate death. Last thing left for him to do was getting Akane out from the people who had given up their life living in artificial city of stone. By the push of his parents and Tsukuno, Akane was freed with him out to the surface.

The earth was in ruins, but it has the power to live the future. Kotarou who was starting to die slowly from rewriting himself so much it turned him into a familiar, in the end reached Kagari with accomplishment of good memories she sought. The truth itself still is a wonder whether it’s the will and power to carve out a new future or something even more profound. Insight, an unanswered yet critical way after ‘do it’ pattern where I conclude the curtain off of earth Kagari conserved the moon’s omnipotent power. The power dissolved into one with Kotarou’s soul forming an orb of restoration and closed its light in a certain tree.  The fate is rewritten.

5 girls in their highschool uniform approached the tree reaching out the moon and awaken a human-shaped familiar from it, on his power talking all them to the moon.

Blunt said, the epilogue-less indefinite kind of ending, despite being unique somehow doesn’t grow a great fulfilling taste of accomplishment. The condition met is definitely a good yet missing one and again, resolve. With Kagari became the focal heroine at an unexpected curve, the hope for the all-together outcome had to be sacrificed for that purpose and concluded to a bit weak and half bit subpar ending. Though still, the converged experiences of all heroines put into a true route is a good feeling that can’t be shaken off. Most of the mysteries are remain questionable yet unsolved and those most likely solvable by thinking about it logically. Moral-wise, right at the century, it teaches how humanity should live and care the nature in spite of wearing out environment and resources. In my case, the cruelty of time is the harshest thing. Something lost won’t come back, nothing could be done but regret and bear the pain.

Initializing Rewrite, the Key logo shows it how good the animation is. Then come after transition of the title screen from top of the tree to its land followed with fade in Rewrite logo and menu buttons. A little brush up at the bottom, seamless ripple of water mirror effect reflecting a little space above it with the text menu. Jump to the gallery, drag-able hand-tool-like touch allows flicking to move through the pages. The interface comprised with event CG, op ed movie, background scenery, and soundtrack music is decent-built plus mesmerizing transition as though all of it was placed altogether in a wide layer. In-game graphical effect was quite lacking, though still in acceptable lane since the focal-point dominates on the plot development.

Memories screen, comprised of information about friend, monster, and quest that somehow placed up in the config menu. Friends made, familiars encountered, and quests completed, all of those stored and updated at some points embedded with their information of which some of the content is nowhere to be found in the story, very useful to get better description and trivia knowledge out of it.

Soundtrack is something that doesn’t need a second thought to mark it outstanding, and this apply only mostly to Key Sounds Label. The Key-typical calming as breeze title background music, Journey (旅) which consistently it used as a base for Moon route – Song of Passage (渡りの詩) and Terra route – CANOE. Listening to Song of Passage consist of undecipherable lyrics raises my curiosity as it’s drawing attention with possibly combination of a dozen language or more, jammed into a sheet of paper. It is indeed living up to its title.

Rewrite brings all-over nature theme which not limited to even the soundtrack. Leitmotiv soundtrack, never and shouldn’t be ever cease from a masterpiece, this time feels quite natural-esque. Soft and composed theme of Kotori, Anemone flaccida (ニリンソウ) and Shizuru, Dianthus caryophyllus (カーネーション), merry and sprightliness-impulsing theme of Chihaya, Ipomoea nil (アサガオ) and Lucia, Phemeranthus parviflorus (サンブライト), grandeur-engraining and enticing theme of Akane, Anthurium (アンスリウム), and also orphic and contemplative theme of Kagari, Bellis perennis (ヒナギク). Even the forest, as one of main background of the story has Depths of the Forest (深層森林) for its own distinctive soundtrack.

Rewrite has it a change of field and that demand them a high beat war stance soundtrack that fits battle tension and nocturnal gloom, or even confrontational culmination. Some of soundtrack of this type is what actually quite surprising for me, which two or three of them are bounded by the storyline. In other words, listening to them on a daily basis would lead to degradation of its taste low enough. Some of them are indeed guts clashing race-riding such as tempo-accelerating Eruptible, ground-shifting Retribution, and the most spine-thrilling one – Phobia. A few are good for teary moments though which have really nice melody are Reply and Scene shifts there, as well with beautiful and remorseful Scattered Flowers (散花). Kotori, Chihaya, and Lucia route have the same, Beyond the Darkness (闇の彼方へ) ending song while unlocked route has different ending theme of which Honesty based, To You Who Never Lie (偽らない君へ) for Akane route and Carnation based, Love Letter (恋文) for Shizuru route. Forget me not, some Fertilizer for Blooming Flower and its Fruits on common days is important, however the supreme spellbinding symphony hold by 芽吹き is something even god can’t beat, capable to stream the circle of life in eternal session.

For side entertainment as known as mini games, collecting friends as part of completing quest are a way to enjoy every bit of this. Using interactive gps mapping app called Mappie, discover every circle and people hidden in the area. Figuring it alone is quite tiring though, so I recommend just follow a walkthrough and get it done sweatlessly. Perfect completion actually is not just for fun and self-satisfaction only. Embrace the best route yet, oppai! The deal with Akane is not just talk, and the science couldn’t back all the phenomena up alone. Squeezing rubbing fondling, and it won’t ever be enough. The aftertaste… smell it, feel the sensation, and lick it like a pervert should be, so granted the boobday (乙月杯日). The world rebirth fell epic the spin off was practically lethal, so hilarious it’s freezing the hell. All hail pettanko creamy Kagarin! (・人・)

For me personally, I only like Kanbe Kotori route because her route is a neutral route which didn’t side either Gaia nor Guardian. Kanbe Kotori is my best and only favorite heroine, character and voice actor because Kotori is very feminine heroine and character in this VN. I only like Kotori theme song between 5 heroine theme songs. I really like kotori route because in kotori route kotarou’s and kotori’s past is revealed and also this ending is my only favourite ending because the last part in this route (kotarou escape from hospital in search of kotori) is my best part so far and the last CG appear on kotori route (Kotarou’s Journey) is my best CG in Original Rewrite so far. The ending theme song “Yami no Kanata e” is my most favorite song in the original rewrite VN.

    • Genuine Kotori lover, eh.
Come to think of it, right, Kotori was indeed the only one that had pure cutesy of being a girl right from the start there, compared to stong-minded Lucia, though-willed Shizuru, Chihaya and her loyal butler, and Gaia-supported Akane.
If not for Terra, certainly she’d be the central heroine as she had the strongest link to Kotarou. It didn’t crossed to me before but, the nature of her route’s genre made a quite dramatic impression with their utmost struggle to survive.

While that, still I myself not so leaned toward one heroine since every route had unmatched selling-point on their own focal genre. Though subjectively, Kotori’s sure a bit special out of five.

    • Stephen Evert Christian

Yes, you’re right, but even thought I’m mostly satisfied with Kotori’s route ending in Rewrite, I still want to play her route in Rewrite Harvest festa! someday.

  2. Stephen Evert Christian

In this VN, I dislike all route other than kotori route. But, I’m very dislike Akane’s, moon and terra route and I’m mostly dislike Shiruzu’s route between 8 main plot in this VN. also I’m mostly dislike the bonus scenario called Oppai.

    • Now that I couldn’t agree with. Well, our fundamental impression might be that diverse.
Aside the disfavor towards some of the heroine routes, I find it a little surprising for someone to dislike the true route, Luna and Terra. Being the truest route which lead the conclusion to overall matters spread across, it’s the most astounding resolution to ending ever decided for perfect solution. It’s still the most top rated ending on my list.

As for Oppai route being the best was just joking hyperbole simply for enjoyment. It’s just for fun, had no essence, and definitely just for amusement. No need to dislike it, unless you actually had it reached without a walkthrough, you might as well hate it for being pointless and time-wasting. w

I’m very sorry for the foul language(Literally refer to word “dislike”), Skyvory. I want to say that I didn’t dislike Chihaya’s, Lucia’s, Moon and Terra route. I just want to say that I just not interest in Chihaya’s, Lucia’s, Moon and Terra route and their ending(even thought Chihaya’s, Lucia’s and Terra Route got a happy ending). Also I only dislike Shizuru’s and Akane’s route and ending because I don’t like how tragical their routes were and the fact that none of them got a happy end. But, I still dislike Oppai route for different reasons.

  4. Stephen Evert Christian

I will be honest, from the beginning I never interest at Ohtori Chihaya, Nakatsu Shizuru, Konohana Lucia and Kagari and their routes (and Oppai Scenario) and also the other characters in this vn, but in the beginning, I like Kanbe Kotori and I prefer Senri Akane and their routes as well but several months later, I equally like Kanbe Kotori and Senri Akane and their routes, and before long my preference turned upside down because I starting to prefer Kanbe Kotori and her route and ending than Senri Akane and her route and ending rapidly and eventually I no longer interest at Senri Akane and her route and ending and that’s makes Kanbe Kotori became my only favorite character, voice acting, character’s theme song, route and ending. So basically Kanbe Kotori went from my 2nd favorite character, route and ending (After Senri Akane from the beginning) to most (and only) favorite character, route and ending (Because I no longer interest at Senri Akane nor her route and ending because I don’t like how tragical her routes were and the fact that her route did not got a happy end because she became a villain near the end of the route) because she kept working as a druid to keep Kotarou alive, for his sake (that and the last scene) and even thought most people prefer Konohana Lucia and her route and ending, most people say Lucia’s route is the best, some people say Chihaya’s route is epic and very few people prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and her ending, but I’m one of the very few people who prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and ending. Some people who prefer Kanbe Kotori and her route complain about the ending, but I’m one of the very few people who prefer Kanbe Kotori and her route did not complain about the ending because for me the ending was very amazing because Kotarou and Kotori became normal human after Kagari die, because Kotarou and Kotori will not involved in that war between two secret organization anymore and because Kotarou is alive, then he and Kotori can live as a normal human in society. Maybe females like play this route and even thought I am a male, I prefer Kanbe Kotori than any characters nor heroines in both Rewrite and Rewrite Harvest festa! because Kanbe Kotori is the most feminine heroine for me and I very like feminine heroine and also I’m not the only male who prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and ending, but there is some male who prefer Kanbe Kotori other than me. If I remember correctly of all/several people who loves Rewrite (and/or Rewrite Harvest festa!) VN to chose their favorite heroine, the current sequence is: 1st Konohana Lucia, 2nd Kagari, 3rd Senri Akane, 4th Nakatsu Shizuru, 5th Ohtori Chihaya and last Kanbe Kotori. I prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and ending not because I imitate and not because I pity someone who prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and ending, instead I prefer Kanbe Kotori, her route and ending from myself and from the bottom of my heart. So, that’s the reason I became Kanbe Kotori’s fan and became genuine Kanbe Kotori’s lover.

    • Well, everyone have their own preferences. Couldn’t talk much about how and why people like who in general which I think it’ll become too stereotyped.

If I remember correctly of all/several people who love Rewrite (and/or Rewrite Harvest festa!) VN to chose their favorite heroines, the current sequence is: 1st Konohana Lucia, 2nd Kagari, 3rd Senri Akane, 4th Nakatsu Shizuru, 5th Ohtori Chihaya and last Kanbe Kotori.

The official site states Akane the first while Chihaya the last though. Just noticed I do belong to majority. w

    • Stephen Evert Christian

Whoa, I’m very surprise that you say Akane to be the first while Chihaya is the last because I checked that sequence based on the other website and that sequence is different. Well, could you tell me the favorite heroines current sequence on the official website since I cannot open the official site?

    • Maybe you could try accessing it using proxy site like this one.

      Here’s a brief of top 10:
      1. Senri Akane
      2. Nakatsu Shizuru
      3. Konohana Lucia
      4. Kanbe Kotori
      5. Kagari
      6. Ohtori Chihaya
      7. Ohtori Sakuya
      8. Tennouji Kotarou
      9. Haruhiko Yoshino
      10. Senri Akane (childhood)

  5. Stephen Evert Christian

Thank you, and (maybe) this will be my last question to you, which visual novel do you like most?

    • It’s undoubtedly this one, still topping my list since first playthrough. The true route is the best one I’ve seen, not to mention most the godly soundtracks. And many more point of interest fall into my liking.

    • Stephen Evert Christian

Thank you and the visual novel I like most is also Rewrite and Rewrite Harvest festa!(even thought I never play it and only watched it several times) because Kotori’s route is the best one I ever seen in both VN’s.

  6. In this VN, I like all routes (including moon and terra) because the routes are unique (Oppai route is hillarious althought not part of the main routes). Out of all routes in rewrite, my favourites are Kotori’s, Akane’s, Chihaya’s and Shizuru’s route (Althought Shizuru’s route ending is depressing). I might be wrong but i think Chihaya’s and Lucia’s route is probably the most unique out of all heroines route because i think on one hand, Lucia’s route is the only route in rewrite that the common route end in late october (i forgot the date) instead in 13th november like any other heroine routes, and also the only route that doesn’t focus on the conflict between gaia and guardian, instead it focused on mystery called “Asahi Haruka” (which is Lucia’s real name) and the relationship between Kotarou and Lucia more so than any other heroine routes (they even got a date scene at the mall i think). Still, i think i like that date scene, the fighting scene between Lucia and Shizuru as well and I enjoyed the route and ending as well. On the other hand Chihaya’s route is very different from the route that starts after 13th november in common route because her route is probably similar to shonen manga and hand many fighting scenes when compared to some heroine routes and the ending is much happier than most heroine routes. As for the characters, my favourites are Kotori, Chihaya, Akane and Shizuru (althought i also like Lucia and Kagari too despite not one of my favourite characters and also Yoshino, Sakuya, Touka etc). But anyway, I enjoyed playing rewrite from the begining to the end and rewrite is one of my favourite visual novel.

Your questions, impressions, and critics are very appreciated おk.
